A 7.6 magnatude earthquake hit southern Mexico earlier today, it’s epicenter was approximately 120 miles east of Acapulco and 10.9 miles underground. It was a long earthquake that was felt in Mexico city to the extent that it emptied office buildings, made a mess of traffic and knocked out cellular service in some areas.
Here in Puerto Vallarta, we felt little or no effect and there has been no damage. If you have properties or loved ones here in Vallarta right now, rest assured the earthquake has not affected them.
Earth quakes are taken very seriously in Mexico since the devastating earthquake of 1985 which caused enormous damage and loss of life in Mexico City. While today’s earthquake was severe at 7.6 on the Richter Scale, there have not yet been any reports of serious damage or loss of life… for that we can be thankful!
UPDATE – As reports come in, it appears there was some pretty major damage in Guerrero, the state where the epicenter was located. According to the Governor, at least 800 homes were destroyed in Igaulapa, a small city near the epicenter. Still no reports of any deaths or serious injury, which is encouraging news.
The U.S. Geological Society revised it’s earlier estimate of magnitude, lowering it to 7.4 from 7.6, and placing the depth at 12.4 miles.
Thank you for the info–wondering about friends who moved to Puerto Vallarta and hoped they are OK. J.
I’m glad we could help! I hope others leave comments too… I like to know that people find this useful.
